Their experience of Asian affairs was of great benefit to the Russian state. Central Asia beckoned but Tsar Peter the Great turned his eyes westwards. The Russians occupied Crimea at the end of the eighteenth century (after the disintegration of the Golden Horde in 1502, the remnants established their capital at Bakhchiserai in Crimea). However it was only after the Crimean War (1854–56), in which they were defeated by Britain and France, that Russia turned its gaze towards Central Asia. Westward expansion was denied so eastward expansion beckoned.

Disaster struck, in June 1842, when 4,500 British and Indian troops and 12,000 camp followers were forced to retreat from Kabul.
